Pakistan is set to release the leader of outlawed terrorist group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi after the Punjab provincial government removed an appeal to extend his detention under public order laws.
The decision to end the detention of Malik Ishaq was made by a three-judge review panel at Lahore High Court on Monday and he is expected to be released on Thursday.
"Appeal for further extension in detention of Malik Ishaq is dismissed as withdrawn," the provincial review board said.
The Tuesday announcement comes after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif promised to take "immediate action" against the pro-Taliban militants behind the deadly attack on a military-run school in the country's northwestern city of Peshawar.
The chief of the anti-Shia terrorist group has been detained for the last three years under a public security order for making "provocative" speeches, as well as masterminding deadly attacks including two bombing targeting Shias in the southwestern city of Quetta in 2013 that killed about 200 people.
Earlier this year, the US State Department declared Ishaq a "specially designated global terrorist."
The terrorist group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi was founded in 1996.
