Pakistan's prime minister has met with army chiefs to discuss the recent deadly clashes between Pakistani and Indian forces in the disputed Kashmir region.

On Friday, Nawaz Sharif summoned his advisors and military officials to take part in a National Security Committee meeting in Islamabad over the deadly cross-border clashes between Pakistan and India.

'The committee expressed the resolve that any attempt to challenge Pakistan's territorial integrity and sovereignty will be responded with full force,' read the statement released after the Friday meeting.

'The Armed Forces assured the National Security Committee that they are fully prepared to deal with any adversity at our borders,' added the statement.

The Indian and Pakistani military forces began exchanging gunfire and mortar shells in Kashmir on October 3. Each side has blamed the other for initiating the violence.

The worst spell of violence in the disputed region in years has so far claimed the lives of 19 civilians -- 11 Pakistanis and eight Indians -- and injured dozens of others.

Earlier on Thursday, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed concern over Kashmir clashes, calling on both sides to resolve the hostility through negotiation.

Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 66 years of animosity between India and Pakistan. Both neighbors claim the region in full but have partial control over it.

Islamabad and New Delhi have fought three wars, two of which over Kashmir, since their independence from the British colonial rule in 1947.
