A Pakistani court has ordered the country's ex-military ruler Pervez Musharraf to attend a hearing later this month after his recent failures to show up over cases of bomb scares and poor health.
Court registrar, Abdul Ghani Soomro, said on Thursday that a medical report on Musharraf's health refuted rumors that the former military chief had suffered a heart attack.
According to Soomro, the judges examined a medical report submitted to the court by the hospital earlier this week and said Musharraf must appear on January 16, 2014.
Musharraf has been hospitalized at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology in Rawalpindi since January 2. The authorities rushed him there instead of taking him to court for a hearing in his high treason case.
Prosecutors have claimed that the dramatic detour to the hospital was only a ploy to avoid appearing in court.
On December 24, 2013, Musharraf's trial was also adjourned because of a 'serious threat to his life' after police found an explosive device and two pistols near his residence in the Islamabad suburbs. At the next hearing on January 1, 2014, there was a bomb scare again.
Musharraf took power in a 1999 coup against the government of Nawaz Sharif, who is now back in power.
The high treason case relates to his decision in 2007 to declare a state of emergency and arrest a number of judges, including the country's chief justice.
Musharraf - the first former military ruler to face trial for treason in Pakistan - says all the accusations against him are politically motivated.
