KARACHI, Pakistan -- A Taliban commander has been killed in an ongoing operation against militants and criminals in Pakistan's commercial hub, Karachi.
Senior police official Chaudry Aslam said on September 18 that Taliban commander Hazrat Ali was killed late the previous day.
Aslam said an additional 43 people have been arrested since September 17.
Hundreds of suspects have been arrested in the widescale operation, which started shortly after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited Karachi on September 4 and ordered officials in the city to rein in lawlessness there.
Terrorist attacks, killings by criminal groups, kidnappings, and extortion have plagued Karachi in recent years.
Rights groups claim more than 2,000 people have been killed in the city so far this year.
