Pakistan's Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ebrahimi has tendered his resignation amid allegations of vote rigging.
In his resignation letter addressed to President Asif Ali Zardari, the outgoing election chief said that he tried to perform to the best of his abilities despite personal threats.
"Despite personal threats and even brazen gun attack on my family, I quietly stood firm against those forces who first tried to derail and then delay the 2013 Elections," Ebrahimi said.
Ebrahim, a former senior judge, was appointed in July last year. He supervised the general election in May and the presidential election of Tuesday.
Several opposition parties claimed that the May elections were rigged, a claim categorically denied by the Election Commission.
Ebrahimi was also criticized for failure to stand up against the Supreme Court when it arbitrarily changed the date of presidential elections.
The opposition Pakistan People's Party and some other opposition parties boycotted the presidential election on Tuesday in protest against the change in the election date.
