Militants have killed nearly a dozen foreign tourists in a remote and mountainous area in northern Pakistan, officials say.
Senior Pakistani police official Ali Sher said on Sunday that the attack was carried out before dawn in the Gilgit-Baltistan area of Diamer District. The tourists were from China, Ukraine and Russia.
The incident occurred as the foreigners were preparing to climb Nanga Parbat, one of the highest mountains in northern Pakistan.
“Gunmen came and opened fire on them. It is confirmed that they have been killed,” said Mohammed Naveed, a Diamer police official.
“We have sent helicopters to the area to recover the dead bodies. A search operation has been launched. All the entry and exit points have been sealed.”
There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.
Reports say acts of violence have claimed the lives of more than 6,000 people in Pakistan over the past six years.
Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Pakistan entered an alliance with the United States in the so-called war on terror.
Thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
