Heavily-armed militants have shot and killed at least two anti-Taliban militia chiefs in Pakistan's troubled northwest tribal region, security officials say.

Local security officials said on Friday the pair were killed when about a dozen pro-Taliban militants armed with guns and rockets attacked their homes near Khar, the main town in Bajaur, late Thursday.

Several people, including two policemen, were injured in the deadly attack across the lawless region.

Security sources said the attackers managed to flee the scene before the tribal policemen cordoned off the area.

Medical sources said the death toll is expected to rise as some of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it targeted the leaders for leading armed resistance against militant groups in the troubled region.

The leaders had played a major role in setting up the Lashkar (militia) to drive pro-Taliban militants out of restive northwestern Swat valley and its adjacent areas in 2009.

Despite the Pakistani government's operations against militants and terrorists, they are still able to spread their influence in various regions of the country.

Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US in the so-called war on terrorism.

Thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
