Pakistani lawmakers have endorsed Nawaz Sharif as the country's new prime minister, electing him to an unprecedented third term.

More than a decade after Sharif was ousted in a coup, the 63-year-old former two-time premier was elected for the position for a third time in the National Assembly on Wednesday.

He is expected to take oath before Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari later in the day.

Sharif is also expected to address the National Assembly.

"He will talk about his priorities and his government's strategy to deal with the issues of crippled economy, load shedding (power cuts) and law and order situation," Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League Party (PML-N) spokesman Siddiq-ul-Farooq said.

Sharif will also have to deal with militant-related violence and high unemployment.

"He will also take the assembly into confidence on steps that his government will take to uphold rule of law and democracy in the country by promoting politics of accommodation, sobriety, patience, and tolerance."

During general elections held on May 11, Sharif's center-right party secured 176 seats of the 342-member lower house of the assembly.

Sharif served twice as prime minister in the 1990s before being ousted in a military coup. Following the coup, Sharif spent eight years in exile.
