Pakistani Cleric Qadri Says Deal Reached With Government

Islamic cleric Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, the organizer of this week's antigovernment demonstrations in Islamabad, says he has reached an agreement with the government.
The announcement comes after Qadri held talks on January 17 with a delegation of cabinet ministers in a bullet-proof container near the parliament building, where he has resided since January 15.
Qadri, addressing thousands of supporters, said he had reached a written agreement with officials, who then sent the document to Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to sign.
The agreement was met with celebration as antigovernment protesters danced and cheered. It was not yet clear whether the agreement meant Qadri would end his five-day rally.
Qadri, who recently returned to Pakistan after years in Canada, has demanded key democratic and electoral reforms from the government.
