Islamabad, Aug 30, IRNA -- At least 9 Pakistani soldiers and 10 militants were killed in clashes in South Waziristan tribal region, security sources said Wednesday.
The clashes started after the heavily armed militants attacked a check post at Farhang Baba area of South Waziristan, they said.
Nine soldiers were killed and several others injured, they said.
The security forces launched a counter attack and killed 10 militants, a security official said. He said that 8 more militants were injured in the clashes.
The security forces also launched a search operation after the attack.
The security forces have cleared most of South Waziristan from the Taliban militants during the 2009 major ground and air offensive. Taliban militants are still hiding in remote mountainous areas and routinely launch attacks on security forces.
A large number of displaced families have started returning to their homes who had left them in view of fighting between the government forces and the Taliban militants.
South Waziristan is the birthplace of Taliban movement and the place where the slain militant leader Baitullah Mehsood launched Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP in 2007.
