Taliban Threatens To Kill Pakistani Politician-Cricket Star Imran Khan

August 09, 2012

The Taliban has threatened to kill a Pakistani cricket star-turned-politician if he holds a planned march to their tribal stronghold along the Afghan border in September to protest U.S. drone attacks.

Although Pakistan's Taliban opposes drone strikes, which have killed many of their fighters and commanders, spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan told said Taliban suicide bombers would target Imran Khan because he called himself a "liberal" -- a term they associate with a lack of religious belief.

Ahsan also warned that the Taliban would attack anyone who participated in upcoming elections.

The threats come as a surprise to Khan's critics in Pakistan, who say he is not being tough enough on the Pakistani Taliban and, instead, focuses most of his criticism on the government's alliance with the United States.
