Pakistan capable of shooting down US drones: scientist

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, May 29, IRNA -- Founder of Pakistan’s nuclear program, Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan said that the country has the capability to shoot down unmanned US surveillance aircraft.

Khan made the remarks as US has stepped up strikes in Pakistan’s tribal regions and has carried out five attacks in a week.

The nuclear scientist said that Pakistan's missiles, built some 15 years ago, have the capability to shoot down drones.

“Pakistan’s defence looks very impenetrable externally, but it is vulnerable internally due to the internal situation of the country,” he said.

“Even having nuclear capability, it is a wrong perception that we can not take action against the United States, Britain or France because we have accumulated nuclear system against India,” he said.

Khan was the man behind Pakistan’s nuclear tests in 1998 in response to Indian tests.

“We were hoping that the nation would focus on progress, education and industrial advancement but the rulers are not focusing on the welfare of the people,” the scientist said.
