Pakistani PM terms Zardari India visit successful

Islamabad, April 9, IRNA -- Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has described as fruitful the visit to India by President Asif Ali Zardari.

President Zardari wrapped up a day-long visit to India on Sunday evening after meeting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and paying a visit to the shrine of a Muslim saint, presidential spokesman said.

President Zardari and Indian Prime Minister Singh discussed wide-range of issues and invited Mr Singh to visit Pakistan and the Indian Prime Minister accepted the invitation.

Gilani said friendly relations with the neighbouring countries ensure regional harmony, stressing that Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit would strengthen bilateral

relations between Pakistan and India.

To a query, he said Pak-India relations have been on a higher note with the exchange of high-level delegations from both sides like recent visits by the Indian parliamentary delegations as well as Speaker of the Indian parliament ‘Lok Sabha’.

Vis-a-vis the Most Favoured Nation status to India, the Premier told reporters in Lahore that the trade relations are in the interest of people of both the countries.

About any break-through in talks with India on Kashmir as well as water issue, Gilani said the government is optimistic with the intention to promote regional harmony, adding that his government would keep working for durable peace in the region for future generations.

To another query, he said the government looks for a solution of the Kashmir issue which is acceptable to the people as well as leadership of Kashmir.

Prime Minister Gilani said regarding the President’s visit to India, said that the visit was successful, adding that all core issues including Kashmir came under discussion during President's Indian visit.

He said the government has been making efforts for regional peace and stability through trade with China, India, Iran and Afghanistan.

'Progress on balance of trade with India, Pak-Afghan Transit Trade and energy projects with Iran will help the country achieve cherished goal of stability in the region', he said.
