Army recovers dead bodies of soldiers killed by avalanche

Islamabad, April 7, IRNA -- Army rescue teams have recovered some dead bodies of Pakistani soldiers, who were buried in an avalanche in northern Pakistan, army said on Saturday.

Pakistan army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas talking to media said that at least 100 Pakistani soldiers were buried when an avalanche hit their camp in Siachen area of Pakistan.

The incident occurred at about 6am at an altitude of about 16,000 feet and 180 miles northeast of Skardu the capital of Baltistan.

'More than 100 soldiers of NLI (Northern Light Infantry) including a colonel were trapped when the avalanche hit a military camp,' Abbas said.

Some dead bodies have been recovered by rescue teams, a statement released by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said as troops with sniffer dogs, aided by helicopters, were carrying out rescue operations.

“Around 100 persons of army came under a snow slide early this morning in Gayari sector near Skardu,” the statement said.

“Rescue efforts are on. Sniffing dogs, helicopters and troops on ground are employed for this purpose,” the statement added.

Avalanches and landslides frequently block roads and leave communities isolated in the mountains of Pakistan.
