Pakistani Lawmakers Set To Debate U.S. Ties

March 19, 2012

by RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal

Pakistani lawmakers are expected to debate new terms of engagement with the United States this week.

Ties have been frozen since U.S. air strikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers at the Afghan border in November 2011.

A Pakistani all-party committee tasked with coming up with recommendations for the new policy toward Washington will present its recommendations to a joint session of both houses of parliament on March 20.

Ahead of the session, a committee member told RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal under condition of anonymity: "If we are going to do something, then we also expect something in return."

The recommendations reportedly include a request for more money for allowing U.S. and NATO forces to transit supplies to Afghanistan and an apology for the border killings.
