Pakistan Army chief. President discuss security

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, January 14, IRNA -- Pakistan’s Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani met President Asif Ali Zardari Saturday evening amidst deteriorating relations between the civilian government and the military leaders.

“Current security situation was discussed during the meeting,” a brief statement from the President office said.

No more details were given in the statement.

The meeting took place ahead of Defence Committee meeting to be presided over by Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani where three services chiefs will also be present.

Sources said the Army Chief meeting with the President focused on ways how to reduce uncertainty in the country in the wake of harsh statements by the Prime Minister about the army and intelligence chiefs.

Prime Minister Gilani said last week that the army and the intelligence chiefs had violated rules by submitting statements in the Supreme Court in the memo scandal.

The army had also issued a harsh statement in response to the Prime Minister’s statement and had warned that accusations against the army can have ‘grievous consequences’ for the country.
