Pakistan reports huntdown for militants after five agents killed

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Nov 13, IRNA -- Pakistani security forces Sunday launched hunt for suspected militants of a banned group, behind the killing of five itelligence officials in eastern Punjab province.

Officials and local media said that militants of banned extremist ‘Lashkar-e-Jhangvi’ group had kidnapped four intelligence officials, who had gone to district Chakwal to trace the militants in mountainous area.

Army and police, backed by military helicopters, carried out operation to recover the abducted intelligence officials but they had been killed and their bodies were thrown.

A major was also among the slain officials.

The militants, led by a wanted leader Dr Arshad, alias Mufti, exchanged fire with the security men late Saturday.

Earlier local media had reported that Dr Arshad and several other militants were killed during the operation. But officials later denied report of the killing of Arshad or any other militant.

The District Police Officer in Chakwal said that Dr Arshad and his accomplices had fled late Saturday night after the forces launched operation.

The government had announced a reward of five hundred thousand rupees for the arrest of Dr Arshad. He is accused of his involvement in series of attacks on Shia Muslims and a minority ‘Ahmadi’ group.
