US drone strike kills 2 in Pakistan
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, Sept 28, IRNA -- A US drone aircraft fired missile into Pakistan’s South Waziristan tribal region late Tuesday and killed at least two persons, security officials said.
The spy plane fired two missiles on a compound in Azam Warsak area near the Afghan border.
No information was given about the identity of the slain men. Some sources said they belonged to the local Taliban group led by Mulla Nazir.
Mulla Nazir has struck a peace deal with the government but the US accuses him of sending fighters to Afghanistan and his supporters are the target of the US spy aircraft.
Residents said they had seen US pilotless aircraft before the strike and also after the attack.
The people could not go to the site fearing another attack as the US had in the past also fired on those people who rush for relief activities.
This is the first drone strike in South Wazirstan since early August.
US drones routinely conduct strikes in Pakistan’s Waziristan tribal region, which the US considers as the main hideout for al-Qaeda and Taliban militants. The US accuses militants for launching cross-border attack.
Pakistan publicly opposes US drone strikes considering it as counterproductive in the war on terror. But the US has ruled out any change in the policy.
