Top Pakisran army general 'injured' in helicopter firing

Islamabad, Sept. 21,IRNA -- A senior Pakistan army officer was slightly injured when unidenfied men fired at his helicopter in northwest of the country on Wednesday, local media reported.

TV channels reported that Major General Javed Iqbal was flown to military hospital for treatment in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

Reports said that the army officer received injuries on his right leg and that he is in stable condition. His helicopter came under firing in Dir district of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province.

There was no official comment on the incident.

No group claimed responsbility for the incident.

It was not clear who have fired at the helicopter of General Javed Iqbal, who is operational officer in-charge in Swat valley, the former stronghold of Pakistani Taliban.

Pakistani security forces had conducted major operation against the militants in Swat in 2009 and expelled them from the area. Hundreds of people had been killed and over two million displaced during the months of operation.

Maulvi Fazalulah, chief of the Swat Taliban, escaped the military operation and the military says he has now established bases in Afghanistan's eastern Nuristan provinces.
