Gunmen kill 3 Pakistani policemen, free 2 militants

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Aug. 12, IRNA -- Unidentified gunmen shot dead three policemen in northwest Pakistan on Friday and snatched two suspected militants from the police, officials and witnesses said.

The gunmen opened fire on a police mobile in Peshawar city and managed to free two militants from police custody.

The two freed men -- Nadeem Abbas and Zaki Shah -- were arrested during separate search operations against the Taliban militants.

The two men were being taken from Central Jail to a hospital for medical check up, police said.

Police sources said that the gunmen had prior information about the movement of the militant prisoners, which has raised concern about their ability to get secret information.

Two policemen were killed on the spot and another died later in hospital, doctors said.

This is the second attack on policemen in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province, in two days.

Earlier, a female suicide bomber and a bomb hidden in a handcart had targeted the police and killed at least seven people and injured over 20 others in Peshawar on Thursday.

Some reports said that the prisoners were involved in heinous crimes including murder and kidnapping.

Meanwhile, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan said on Friday it had used female suicide bomber to target the policemen in Peshawar.

A Taliban spokesman told media in Peshawar on phone that the attack was aimed at taking avenge of military operations in the tribal regions.

Officials said that a teenager girl blew herself up near a police checkpoint also killing another woman shortly after another bomb killed six people in Peshawar.
