Bomber kills 7 in public meeting in NW Pakistan

Islamabad, July 12,IRNA -- A suicide bomber blew himself up near a public meeting of a major political party in northwest Pakistan on Monday and killed at least seven people, police and witnesses said.

The bomber wanted to enter the public meeting of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q) party at the city of Batgram in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province, they said.

Police sources said that two policemen and a woman were among those killed in the blast.
PML-Q party has recently joined the ruling coalition led by Pakistan Peoples Party of President Asif Ali Zardari.

When the police guards tried to stop the bomber from entering the meeting place he detonated bomb stripped to his body, a police officer said.

The party central leader Amir Muqam was scheduled to address the public meeting. But the blast took place before he arrived at the site of the blast.

Scores of other people were injured who were shifted to a local hospital by the people in private cars.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack. The government usually blames Taliban militants for such attacks. The PML-Q party support military operation against the militants.

Taliban militants have targeted the PML-Q party leaders in the past.

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has strongly condemned the blast in Battagram in the vicinity of the jalsa of PML (Q) leader, Mr. Amir Muqam which was going to be held in a short while, resulting in the shahdat of innocent people and injuries to many.

The Prime Minister in his message said that such cowardly acts could not deter the government’s strong determination to wipe out the terrorist from the country. He said that attacks upon the political leadership of the country clearly shows the intention of the terrorists that they have no regard for anybody and that they are following their own nefarious agenda. He appealed to the masses to get united as these elements are on run and they are making their last ditch efforts by targeting soft targets.

The Prime Minister condoled the death of the people in the incident and in his message to Mr. Amir Muqam and the families of the victims prayed to Almighty Allah to shower countless blessing upon the departed souls. He further prayed to grant courage to the bereaved families to bear the loss with equanimity.

The Prime Minister directed the local authorities to strengthen the vigilance and intelligence gathering to foil the militant’s evil designs. He further directed the concerned authorities to provide best medical care to the injured.
