Pakistan party ministers tender resignation

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, June 30, IRNA -- The ministers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the coalition partners of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government, have resigned after their party quits the government in protest.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) took the decision after developing major differences with the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

Thirteen MQM ministers and an advisor in Sindh cabinet dispatched their resignations to the acting governor of Sindh as the party has announced to quit the coalition government.

The MQM had decided to part ways with Pakistan People’s Party government and sit on opposition benches in National Assembly, Senate and Sindh Assembly in protest against the postponement of election on two Karachi seats for the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

The deputy convenor of MQM coordination committee, Farooq Sattar, said when they were in coalition, government used to dictate them.

But now they are in a position to press government to solve people’s problems.

Meanwhile, MQM Chief Altaf Hussain telephoned JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman and informed him about the reasons why his party quit the government.

Both leaders discussed current political situation.

Fazl congratulated Altaf on leaving the government and becoming a part of the opposition.

Fazl criticised PPP’s undemocratic attitude by postponing polls for AJK legislative assembly in two constituencies of Karachi, saying government’s decision has disappointed Kashmiri people.

However, the decision by Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) to quit the ruling coalition has bolstered the bargaining position of Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) and the party has started eying some key positions both at the centre and the provinces.

Political observers believe that the biggest beneficiary of the MQM`s decision would be the PML-Q, and keeping in view the numerical position of the parties in the parliament, the PPP would have no option but to oblige the PML-Q.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa-based Awami National Party (ANP) is the only party that has been sitting with the PPP since the October 2008 elections, though the party has criticised the PPP several times for not consulting it on key matters.
