Pakistani Army Investigates Four Officers About Extremist Ties

June 22, 2011

The Pakistani army says it is questioning four more officers about suspected links with a banned extremist group.

Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said on June 22 that four army majors are being questioned for suspected links with Hizb ut-Tahrir, but have not been detained. He did not provide names.

The development comes a day after the army said it detained Brigadier Ali Khan for suspected ties to Hizb ut-Tahrir.

The group is an international Islamist organization dedicated to the notion of reviving an Islamic caliphate and unifying Muslim countries under the laws of that religion.
