Up To 20 Reported Killed In Militant Attack In Pakistan's Northwest
June 09, 2011
Pakistani security officials say at least eight Pakistani soliders and 10 Taliban militants have been killed in fighting in the northwestern Waziristan tribal region, near the Afghan border.
The officials say more than 100 militants armed with rockets and heavy weapons attacked a security checkpoint early this morning.
An official quoted by the Reuters news agency said security forces hit back at the militants, killing up to 12 and wounding five.
The attack, which is reported to have taken place in the area of Makeen, comes amid a recent increase in the pace of missile strikes by U.S. drone aircraft targeting militants in the tribal region along the Afghan border.
