Pakistan army says unaware of US list

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, May 29,IRNA -- Pakistan army says it is unaware about any list of the most wanted al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders that U.S. media said was handed over to the government by the U.S. Secretary of State during her visit to Islamabad on Friday.

The American ABC News has reported that Hillary Clinton handed over the list of five most wanted militant leaders to the Pakistan during a four-hour meeting with Pakistan’s top political and military leaders.

The list includes two senior al Qaeda figures – Ayman al Zawahiri, Atiya Abdel Rahman, Afghan Taliban reclusive leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, Haqqani network commander Sirajuddin Haqqani and Ilyas Kashmiri, Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI). Kashmiri is considered the man who masterminded audacious attack on Pakistan’s major navy air base in Karachi on Sunday.

Kashmiri and Sirajuddin Haqqani are believed to be in North Waziristan, the only tribal region, still under control of several Taliban groups. The CIA considers this region as the launching pad for cross-border attacks into Afghanistan against foreign and Afghan forces.

Reports said that Hillary Clinton asked Pakistani leaders to immediately provide information about these militants and also join the US for a joint action against them.

Pakistan army’s spokesman Major General Athar Abbas neither denied nor confirmed when asked about the list but said that he is unaware about any such list.

The ABC quoted the US officials as saying that they want to test Pakistan if it is committed to fight wanted militants on its soil.

Pakistan is under tremendous US pressure after the death of Osama bin Laden in the country to act against the al-Qaeda and Afghan Taliban leaders.

Hillary Clinton said in Islamabad on Friday that Osama bin Laden is dead but al-Qaeda is still a threat to the US security and that al-Qaeda must be driven out of Pakistan and the region.
