IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, April 15, IRNA -- Nearly 2500 people had been killed in terrorist attacks while 957 lost lives in U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan in 2010, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) said in its annual report on Thursday.

The HRCP report, released by its chairman Dr Mehdi Hasan in Islamabad, said that terrorism had been the major problem of Pakistan last year.

According to the report, at least 1,159 people including 1,041 civilians were killed in 67 suicide attacks.

According to data about 5,062 were injured in terrorist attacks. While regarding 'target killings' the country's southern port city of Karachi saw the killings of 237 political activists while 118 died in southwestern Balochistan province in 117 incidents.

“The situation in Balochistan is alarming and the situation is moving to worst due to the lack of attention by the government,” Hasan said.

It said that at least 12,580 people were killed in different incidents during 2010 including 791 honor killings while 581 were kidnapped for ransom.

The report, having year's statistics derived largely from media and other undisclosed sources, criticized the government for its failure to protect its citizens, especially religious minorities.

The report also highlights the biggest terrorist incident at the worship place of a religious minority which left 99 members of the Ahmadi sect dead last year in the country's eastern city of Lahore.

The report said that government agencies often violate citizens' rights while beating them for nothing and shooting them in extra-judicial killings.

Reportedly, 338 people were killed in police encounters and only 28 'suspects' were injured and captured alive, the report said, adding that at least 174 people were rescued from illegal police detention.

The Commission officials, in the report, urged political parties and leaders to work together to improve human rights instead of playing power games only for their own.
