Islamabad, March 31, IRNA -- Chief of Pakistan's main Islamic party on Thursday escaped an assassination attempt in a bomb attack in the country’s northwest.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, chief of Jamiat ulema-e-Islam (JUI), said he was safe in the bomb attack in district Charsadda in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province.

He said the bomb exploded near his car, injuring several police men, who had been escorting him and his colleagues.

He said that glasses of his car were also smashed in the attack.

Fazal was heading to Charsadda district to address a public meeting when his motorcade came under attack.

He cancelled the meeting after the attack.
