IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, March 30, IRNA -- A policeman and six other people were killed in a suicide attack in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday, officials said.
The bomber exploded his bomb when supporters of an Islamic group were heading for a pubic meeting in Swabi district in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province, district coordination officer Jababr Shah said.
Shah said that a police officer, Sardar Ali, and six other people were killed while several others were injured.
The bomber targeted the supporters of opposition Jamiat-e-Islam (JUI-F), which is considered as pro-Taliban.
Party sources said that the attack was aimed at hitting the JUI chief, Maulana Fazal-ur-Rahman, whose convoy was passed through the area minutes before the attack.
Officials said that the JUI leader was safe in the attack.
The injured were transferred to hospital in Peshawar, the provincial capital.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani strongly condemned the Swabi Interchange blast in which several innocent persons lost their lives.
He said that it is an inhuman act of the militants who have no regard for human lives or religion. He said that such acts could not undermine the government’s efforts to wipe out the menace of extremism and militancy from the country.
He appealed to the people to remain united against these elements as they are on the run and are making last bitch efforts.
The Prime Minister ordered the authorities to provide immediate and best medical facilities to the injured.
