14 Pakistani soldiers killed in militants' attack: report

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, March 29, IRNA -- A bomb attack on Pakistani army’s convoy on Monday killed at least 14 soldiers and injured several others in a tribal region, TV channels reported.

Two officers were among those killed in the attack in Khyber tribal region, near the Afghan border.

Dawn TV reported that a group of some 50 Taliban militants attacked an army base with rockets and automatic weapons at Bara area of Khyber agency.

The security forces returned fire and inflicted losses on the militants, TV channels reported.

Reports said that a Colonel and a captain were killed in the attack. Two army vehicles were also destroyed in the attack.

Some TV channels said Pakistani security personnel were killed when a mortar exploded near an army convoy.

Taliban and at least three other militant groups are active in Khyber agency, also a major supply route to NATO forces in Afghanistan.

NATO supply trucks and oil tankers are regularly targeted by the militants in Khyber agency.

Pakistani forces have carried out several major operations against the militants in the area and have expelled many of them. But the militants ambush convoys of the security forces and attack roadside checkpoints.
