IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Jan 28, IRNA -- Taliban militants on Thursday dynamited a government school in South Waziristan tribal region in their anti-government campaign, local authorities said.

No one was hurt as educational institutions are closed in the region for winter holidays, they said.

The building of the Higher Secondary School in Wana, the center of South Waziristan, run by the Political administration was razed to ground with five bombs that exploded one after another at 12 noon rocking the whole area.

The explosion was heard in far flung areas of the agency, residents said.

The entire building converted into rubble in no time.

Three Taliban groups are active in South Waziristan but no group has claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Tribal elders condemned destruction of the school and termed it as an anti-education act.

Assistant Political Agent Wana Muhammad Shuaib taking action over bombing of the school, stopped perks and privileges of the tribal elders in the area under territorial responsibility.

The authorities also stopped salaries of the tribesmen of the tribe working in the local force called ‘Khasadar’ and lower grade government employees in different government’s departments in the agency.

The Political Administration has also called a meeting of the120-member peace committee of the main Ahmedzai Wazir tribe to point out the elements involved in bombing of the school in their jurisdiction.

Officials say this is the first time that a school is destroyed by Taliban in South Waziristan, where the security forces have declared victory over the militants.

Taliban militants have destroyed hundreds of schools in other tribal regions and Swat valley in their fight against the security forces.
