Taliban claim responsibility for Governor's murder

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad,Jan 5, IRNA -- Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for the assassination of the Governor of Punjab province, who was shot dead in Islamabad on Tuesday, reports said Wednesday.

Governor Salman Taseer was shot dead by his police guard after he had lunch in an Islamabad’s restaurant.

The attacker Mumtaz Malik told the police investigators that he had killed the governor for his opposition to blasphemy law, which carries death penalty for those who offer derogatory comments for the Prophet of Islam.

Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan has claimed the responsibility of the killing of Punjab Governor, daily The Frontier Post said.

A purported Taliban spokesman said the Governor was killed as he had supported a Christian woman who has been awarded death sentence for blasphemy.

According to the Frontier Post, TTP spokesman Azam Tariq telephoned the paper’s correspondent in Miranshah, the center of North Waziristan and asked him to talk to his colleague Shakirullah Shakir about the killing of Punjab Governor.

Shakir Ullah Shakir claimed that Punjab Governor was killed by TTP for 'supporting the Christian lady Aasia Masih and remarks against Islam.'

He further warned that those who were giving remarks against Islam will be murdered.
