Pakistani prime minister condemns attack on police van

Islamabad, Nov 30, IRNA -- Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has strongly condemned the bomb blast in northwest Pakistan which killed five people, including two policemen, the PM office said in a statement.
The bomber blew himself near a police mobile van in Bannu, a main city in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province, regional police chief Iftikhar Khan said.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack. The authorities blame Taliban militants for such attacks.
Khan said that 12 people were also injured in the attack in the city’s commercial area. TV channels reported that 22 people were injured.
Witnesses said that the bomber was foot who approached the police van and exploded his bomb.
Express TV reported that two policemen, a child and two passersby were killed in the attack. The injured were shifted to the district hospital.
TV footage showed the vehicle which was partly destroyed in the attack.
Police cordoned off the area after the attack and the people closed shops after the blast.
Police said that a search operation was launched after the attack to search facilitators of the attacker.
Residents said that the blast was heard in the city’s Chanbeli Chowk area.
Bannu, a city near the North Waziristan tribal region, has seen deadly attacks on police and pro-government members of peace committees in the past.
In February Taliban killed 16 people including a district police officer in twin attacks at the Police Lines in Bannu.
Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has strongly condemned the bomb blast in Bannu which resulted in death and injuries of innocent and peaceful citizens of the area, the PM office said.
The Prime Minister called upon the concerned authorities to investigate into the incident and ensure proper medical facilities to the injured, it said.
