Blast in tribal council kills 8 in Pakistan

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Aug 23, IRNA -- A bomb blast at a tribal jirga or council Monday killed at least 8 people in a Pakistani tribal region, the local officials said.

The bomb ripped through in the meeting held to resolve a dispute over ownership of a school in Kurrum agency, they said.

A school teacher Shabaan Ali was among those killed, witnesses said.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Locals said that the huge blast was heard in nearby areas.

Pakistan army is engaged in operation against Taliban militants in Kurram agency. It also arrested a would-be suicide bomber and 10 other suspects on Sunday.

Meanwhile another explosion near a mosque in Bara, a main town in northwest Pakistan's Khyber tribal agency, injured at least seven security personnel on Monday.

According to the reports, a brief shootout was also heard near the mosque after the blast.

There has been a lull in series of bomb attacks in Pakistan as the country is facing devastating floods and the militants had suspended attacks in the flood-hit areas.
