Afghanistan Sends Aid to Flood-Hit Areas Of Pakistan

August 10, 2010

KABUL -- Afghanistan has sent a relief team to neighboring Pakistan to assist victims of the deadly floods currently devastating that country, RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan reports.

The Afghan aid is made up of 4.5 tons of medicine, a team of 23 doctors, and nine helicopters sent to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province to facilitate recovery efforts in the region.

Majnoon Gullab, Afghanistan's general counsel in Islamabad, told Radio Free Afghanistan that the government of President Hamid Karzai has sent the aid to demonstrate good will toward Pakistan despite strained relationships in recent years.

UN aid workers say the number of affected people during the past two weeks in Pakistan is about 14 million.
