IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, Aug 7, IRNA -- Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has launched an international appeal for support to help alleviate sufferings of the flood affected people in Pakistan.
Addressing the nation over Radio and Television networks Friday night Gilani pointed out that the country has been hit by the worst floods of its history.
“While the country was still struggling to cope with negative impact of the situation on the Western borders and IDPs crisis, it has yet been hit any another natural disaster,” he said.
“Loss of human lives and infrastructure is colossal but the real assessment of the damage would only be possible once the water recedes”.
The Prime Minister told the international community that the flood is still engulfing new areas and adding to the scale of devastation.
Gilani also appealed to the Overseas Pakistanis to extend support in mitigating sufferings of their brothers and sisters back home.
The Prime Minister urged the corporate sector of the country to shoulder social responsibility and generously support the victims of the floods.
He said the situation created by the flood is a great challenge but added that people have the resolve and courage to take on the challenge as they did during devastating earthquake of 2005.
The Prime Minister appreciated the quick response of some members of the international community who immediately rushed relief goods and provided other support to cope with the consequences of the flood.
The Prime Minister exhorted philanthropists to come forward and vigorously take part in the campaign to collect donations for the flood affected people.
The Prime Minister told the flood affected people that there was no substitute to the loss of precious lives but the Government would make every endeavour to compensate their financial losses.
