Pro-Taliban group claims responsibility for Pakistan mosque attacks

RIA Novosti

16:4328/05/2010 NEW DELHI, May 28 (RIA Novosti) - The Pakistani Islamic group Tehreek-e-Taliban Punjab claimed responsibility on Friday for the seizure of two mosques in Lahore, Pakistani TV channels said, citing a member of the pro-Taliban group.

Earlier on Friday, Pakistani TV reported that commandos stormed the two Ahmadi mosques in the eastern Pakistani city. At least 30 people died when suspected Islamic extremists attacked the mosques.

During the commando operation one attacker was killed and two terrorists were detained. A suicide bomber belt was also recovered.

The attacks occurred just after Friday prayers, when the two Ahmadi mosques were crowded with worshippers marking the Muslim Sabbath.

According to TV reports, the gunmen threw grenades into the buildings before opening fire at people in prayer.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Punjab group unites several terrorist organizations in eastern Pakistan's Punjab province, which was until recently considered a relatively secure part of the country, where terrorist attacks were rare.
