Pakistani commandos storm seized mosques in city of Lahore
16:1028/05/2010 NEW DELHI, May 28 (RIA Novosti) - Pakistani commandos have stormed two Ahmadi mosques in the city of Lahore seized by suspected Islamic extremists early on Friday.
During the shootout one attacker was killed and two terrorists were detained. Police also seized a suicide bomber belt.
According to the Pakistani press, several attackers remain in one of the mosques and continue to resist.
Pakistani TV reported earlier that at least 30 people were killed and hundreds taken hostage by the gunmen in the city of Lahore in eastern Pakistan, near the border with India.
The attacks occurred just after Friday prayers, when the two Ahmadi mosques were crowded with worshippers marking the Muslim Sabbath.
According to TV reports, the gunmen threw grenades into the buildings before opening fire at people in prayer.
The militants are thought to be connected to the radical Islamist Taliban movement.
The Ahmadi Islamic sect has long been discriminated against and has suffered occasional attacks by extremist Sunnis, but nothing on this scale.
