Landmine blast kills Pakistani soldier

Islamabad, May 27, IRNA -- A landmine killed a Pakistani soldier and injured four others in South Waziristan tribal region Wednesday, officials in region said.

They said soldiers were fetching drinking water when their vehicle was hit by a landmine at Asman Manza area of South Waziristan, killing a soldier at the scene and injuring four others. One soldier is in critical condition, they added.

The injured soldiers were taken to an army medical facility.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

The security forces conducted major air and ground offensive against Taliban militants in South Waziristan last year in October, expelling many of from the region.

Some Taliban militants are still hiding in mountainous area and launch attacks on the security forces.

Meanwhile local authorities have claimed that 10 mortars shells were fired from Afghan side of the border at Angor Adda area of South Waziristan late Tuesday night.

No one was hurt as the mortars fell in mountainous areas, they said.
