Pakistani army kills 40 militants in tribal area

Islamabad, May 3, IRNA - Pakistani security forces backed by fighter aircraft have killed around 40 militants in Orakzai tribal region, local TV channels reported.
The forces using artillery destroyed 10 hideouts of the militants, reports said.
Thousands of troops are taking part in the Orakzai operation, which has not been much publicized by the army.
TV channels said that the army has so far killed some 550 militants. There is no independent confirmation of the casualties as journalists have no access to the tribal regions.
UN officials say that over 200,000 people have fled Orakzai since the fighting started in mid-March.
Officials say that most of the Taliban militants from South Waziristan tribal region have moved into Orakzai agency.
