IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, April 8, IRNA -- Following attack on US Consulate General in Pakistani northwestern city of Peshawar, which killed two guards, US has donated communications equipment to police, US Embassy said Wednesday.

A group of six Taliban bombers attacked the consulate in Peshawar on Monday with an explosive-packed car, mortars and other weapons.

The equipment, valued at Rs. 10.9 million ($130,000), will permit law enforcement professionals to better coordinate their efforts to protect the Pakistani people, an embassy statement said.

U.S. Assistant Secretary for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs David Johnson and Embassy Islamabad Deputy Chief of Mission Gerald Feierstein traveled to Peshawar to hand over the equipment to the police, it said.

Assistant Secretary Johnson, who is on a two-day visit to Pakistan, handed over part of the donation which includes 41 vehicle radio systems, 200 handheld wireless radios, and two radio repeaters to Additional Inspector General of Police Abdul Majeed.

“This latest installment of equipment underscores the United States’ ongoing commitment to support Pakistan’s police,” the Assistant Secretary said. “We are standing by Pakistan in the face of terrorist attacks.”

The U.S. supports civilian law enforcement in Pakistan through equipment, training, and refurbishment of police facilities. In 2009 alone, U.S. civilian law enforcement assistance totaled Rs. 4.21 billion ($49,500,000).
