Suspected US drone strike kills another 5 innocents in Pakistan

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Feb 25, IRNA -- A US drone aircraft fired missiles at a house in Pakistan’s North Waziristan tribal region and killed at least five people on spot Wednesday, local tribesmen said.

The strike on a house at Dargah Mandi, a small village six kilometers from Miranshah, the center of North Waziristan, also injured six other people.

The injured were shifted to the main hospital in Miranshah, a tribesman said on phone.

He said that all killed and injured are innocent local tribesmen and not militants.

“The house caught fire shortly after the missiles landed there,” the tribesman said.

He said that the locals were reluctant to rush to the site as they feared another strike. But when the drone returned, the locals went to the attack site and pulled the bodies and the injured victims out of the rubbles.

The United States has stepped up drone attacks in North Waziristan region after the December attack on a Central Intelligence Agency compound in eastern Afghanistan which devastated what has been a hub of intelligence operations for the spy agency.

Seven CIA officers and contractors were killed and six more wounded in the suicide bomb attack at Forward Operating Base Chapman, the second-largest single-day loss for the spy agency in its history.

Locals said that the US has carried out some 15 drone strikes in Waziristan this year.

The Wednesday attack came at a time when the CIA director has arrived in Islamabad for talks on intelligence sharing and review of the war on terror, officials said.

The US CENTCOM chief General David Petraeus is also in Pakistan, has met with the Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani and visited the insurgency-hit Swat Valley on Tuesday.
