Militancy poses great threat to Pakistan's existence: Zaradi

Islamabad, Jan 5, IRNA -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said here Monday militancy and extremism are new and a great threats to country’s existence.

“We need a united national commitment to fight and defeat militancy,” President Zardari told a ceremony at the Pakistan Naval Academy.

He said the present government has also given the political ownership to this fight.

The president expressed satisfaction that the Pakistani Navy's participation in Coalition Maritime Operations has enhanced its capabilities to check arms, drugs and human smuggling, which shows Pakistan’s resolve to promote international peace.

“It has improved our capacity to fight the threat of militancy to our national security."

Zardari expressed pleasure that the Pakistani Navy is also training cadets from brotherly countries including Afghanistan, Maldives, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Sudan.

"It is our duty to fight against the external and internal enemies who disrupt our peace, our progress and our efforts to bring prosperity to the people."

The President said Pakistan does not want an arms race in the region. “At the same time however we must remain prepared to meet any threat to our sovereignty."

Zardari urged the naval officers and cadets to dedicate themselves to their profession and protect the country's sea lanes of communication.

"We will not fail our country and our nation. A strong Navy is necessary to meet any challenge to our maritime security,” he said.
