No progress in Benazir Bhutto's death probe

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Dec 28, IRNA -- There has been no progress in the investigation into the death of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto even two years after her assassination.

Benazir Bhutto was killed in firing and suicide attack in the city of Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007 shortly after she addressed a big rally.

President Asif Ali Zardari, spouse of Benazir Bhutto, had told a gathering on her first death anniversary that he knows the killers of Benazir Bhutto.

And on Sunday Mr Zardari also addressed another gathering on her 2nd death anniversary but did not say who killed Benazir.

President Zardari said that he approached the United Nations to investigate the murder of Benazir Bhutto despite opposition in the country as opposition parties want the country’s own institutions hold the probe.

President Musharraf was ruling Pakistan when Benazir was killed and then government blamed chief of Pakistani Taliban Baitullah Mehsood for masterminding her killing. A spokesman for Baitullah had denied any role.

Musharraf government had invited a team of the British police to help Pakistani police in the probe but there had been no results.

The authorities have arrested some people but they have also denied any hand in the assassination. They are being tried in a court inside a prison in Rawalpindi.

Benazir’s Peoples Party government had approached the United Nations to hold the inquiry and a UN team

Pakistanis have now attached hopes with the UN probe team, which was scheduled to present report by end year.

But Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said Sunday that the UN investigation team has been given one month more time to prepare report. Gilani said that the investigation report will be made public.

Peoples Party organized ceremonies across the country to pay homage to Benazir Bhutto and many people visited her grave in the town of Garhi Khuda Bakhsh in Sindh province to offer prayers.

Some People Party leaders say that if own party could not hold probe into Benazir’s death, then o government can in future hold the investigation.
