Pakistani President for national counter terrorism strategy

Islamabad, Dec 15, IRNA -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari here Monday called for preparation of a national counter terrorism and extremism strategy.

The President gave the directive during a briefing given to him by the Interior Ministry on establishment, role and mandate of National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA).

The President also directed that the NACTA must prepare a National Action Plan to implement and monitor the national counter terrorism strategy.

The President said that Pakistan’s progress and development depends on how effectively we deal with the challenges of extremism and terrorism. He said that extremism and militancy is gnawing society at the core and reiterated resolve to root out the menace from the country and establish the writ of the government at all costs.

The President said that the counter terrorism strategy should address the short, medium and long term goals and objectives and devise action plans for the implementation of each set of objectives. He said the NACTA should be based on most modern technological foundation.

The President expressed satisfaction over the encouraging international and domestic response on the initiative of establishing NACTA.

Coordinator, NACTA, Mr. Tariq Pervez while briefing the President said that NACTA has been set up to prepare National threat assessment reports on extremism, terrorism , insurgency and National Counter Terrorism and extremism strategy and to formulate National Action Plan to monitor implementation of the National Counter Terrorism and extremism strategy.

The NACTA will carry out research and analysis and liaison with international entities in the fields related to terrorism, extremism and insurgency, the President was informed.
