13:1027/05/2009 NEW DELHI, May 27 (RIA Novosti) - At least 20 people have been killed and 230 injured in a car bomb explosion in the east Pakistani city of Lahore, the local police chief said on Wednesday.

A powerful blast occurred close to an intelligence agency office and the city police headquarters.

The country's Dawn TV channel earlier reported that a group of gunmen stepped out of the bomb-laden car and opened fire at nearby buildings. When police returned fire, the gunmen detonated the bomb.

According to other media reports, a suicide bomber rammed his vehicle into the police station.

The country's Interior Minister Rehman Malik suggested the attack could be a retaliation for an anti-Taliban operation in the northwestern Swat Valley, Indian Express said.

Two or three suspected terrorists were detained.
