Pakistani forces engage in gunbattle with militants in Swat

Islamabad, May 19 ,IRNA -- Pakistani security forces Monday engaged in fierce gunbattle with militants in outskirts of a main town in Swat Valley a day after they entered the area, correspondents embedded with army said.

Security forces had entered Matta town, a stronghold of Taliban, yesterday to ‘eliminate miscreants from the area’, according to the army.

Correspondents in Matta said that the forces took control of the town without any stiff resistance on Monday. However the army exchanged fire with the militants Sunday last night at College Chowk locality.

They said the forces attacked a hotel where the militants had taken shelter. Several militants fled.

TV channels reported that over 20 militants and two soldiers were killed.

Correspondents said that fighting continued in the outskirts of Matta. They said that the forces used gunships to bomb positions of the militants.
