Pakistan MPs back military operation against militants

Islamabad, May 12, IRNA -- Opposition and treasury lawmakers Tuesday showed rare unity to back military offensive against the militant and called for stern action against the militants who have challenges writ of the government.

The speakers supported army operation in Swat valley and adjacent areas and said army should be encouraged by the nation so that it could be successful in wiping out militants.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik says that around 700 militants have been killed in Swat in the offensive launched last week.

The parliament was summoned to review the military offensive and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said in the house yesterday that the operation will continue till the elimination of the operation.

Members of the parliament said the government should ensure equitable distribution of relief goods among the displaced persons.

Some members were of the view that independent members should also be included in the Support Group for rehabilitation of displaced persons.

They said the militants who have broken peace deal in Swat intends to destroy peace in the country and are working for destabilization of Pakistan who should be dealt with iron hand.

“The government should deal with iron hand with those who are out to destabilize Pakistan and tarnishing the image of Islam as they have no link with Islam,” Sahibzada Fazal Karim, a member from Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan party said.
