Pakistani PM vows to force militants to lay down arms

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, May 12, IRNA -- Pakistan's Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani Monday vowed to force the militants to lay down arms and said the writ of the government will be established at all cost.

Speaking at the parliament the Prime Minister accused the militants of pursuing foreign agenda to destabilize Pakistan and its institutions.

The parliament session was convened exclusively to review the ongoing military operation against the militants in the northwest.

Making a policy statement on the situation in the Swat region, the prime minister said the anti-state elements were bent upon destroying peace and destabilizing the country.

"No matter how strong they (terrorists) may get, they cannot fight against the armed forces of Pakistan. We will soon force them to lay down their arms," Gilani said.

"These terrorists are out there trying to destabilize and conquer Pakistan. They have their own agenda. They don't have a religion and are working under their foreign masters."

He said the government had signed deal in the northwest for peace but the militants did not respect the deal and challenged the parliament, judiciary and writ of the government.

He said the militants held the security forces hostage and the security forces were attacked and there was no other option but to launch operation.
The Prime Minister urged the nation to support the armed forces in their fight against the militants.

He announced to hold international donors' conference in Islamabad to seek funds for the hundreds of thousands of internal displaced persons due to fighting.
