Pakistani forces kill 16 militants in tribal region

Islamabad, May 3 ,IRNA -- Pakistani security forces killed 16 suspected militants in the country’s tribal region early Saturday, state television reported.
The security forces launched counter attacks after the militants attacked a check post in Muhmand agency, Pakistan Television reported.
Two security personnel were also killed when the militants attacked check posts at Spinkai Tangai area, some 25 kilometers from Ghalani, the headquarters of Muhmand Agency.
Three soldiers were injured while three others have gone missing, local officials said. They said that the militants used rockets to attack the newly built check post.
Witnesses said that the army used helicopters to shell positions of the militants.
Muhmand Agency is located between near the troubled region of Bajaur and Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province.
Officials say that a large number of militants have moved to Muhmand Agency from Bajuar, where the security forces are engaged in offensive against the Taliban militants.
Meanwhile the security forces continued operation against the militants in Buner district in the northwest.
Military sources said that the forces have made progress towards the areas under the militants’ control including Ambela and Babaji Kandao.
The operation was launched on Tuesday after over 400 Taliban entered Buner district from Swat.
The army has said that over 100 militants have been killed in the operation. The army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said on Friday that the forces are facing stiff resistance in parts of Buner.
