Pakistan PM urges nation to stand against militants

Islamabad, May 1, IRNA - Prime Minister, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, said on Thursday that operation in the country’s northwest against the militants is meant to re-establish the writ of the constitution in those parts.

Talking to Interior Minister Rehman Malik, he said at this crucial time entire nation should forget their political differences and rise to the occasion by unitedly meeting the challenges.

He said the military offensive against the militants in Lower Dir and Buner districts is aimed at restoring Pakistan of the founder of the nation Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

“This is the only way the designs of the militant and extremist elements can be defeated,” he added.

The Minister for Interior, Rahman Malik, apprised the Prime Minister of the situation in Karachi after recent incidents of violence on the steps being taken by the law enforcement agencies for maintaining law and order in the mega city.

Over 20 people have been killed and around 30 others injured in Karachi over the past two days in ethnic violence.

The Prime Minister also reviewed the earlier instructions given to the Interior Ministry regarding the early rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons due to offensive in the northwest.

International agencies say that the fighting between the forces and militants have displaced around one million people have displaced.
